When it comes to laser hair removal, many people assume that a stronger laser setting must produce better results. It sounds logical: if more energy is used, the hair should be removed faster.
But laser hair removal does not work that way.
The goal is not to use the strongest setting. The goal is to use the right setting.
Every person has different skin, hair thickness, hair colour, treatment areas, and sensitivity. The laser settings need to be adjusted accordingly. Using too little energy may not provide enough heat to effectively target the hair follicle, while using too much energy can increase discomfort and the risk of unwanted skin reactions.
The Right Setting Matters More Than the Strongest Setting
Laser hair removal works by delivering controlled light energy to the hair follicle. The pigment in the hair absorbs the laser energy, which is converted into heat. This heat helps damage the follicle and reduce its ability to produce new hair.
For this process to work effectively, the laser needs to deliver an appropriate amount of energy to the target.
That does not mean maximum energy.
A professional laser treatment considers factors such as:
- Skin tone and skin type
- Hair colour
- Hair thickness
- Hair density
- Treatment area
- Previous tanning or sun exposure
- Individual skin sensitivity
- Previous response to laser treatments
The settings can then be adjusted to provide an effective treatment while maintaining an appropriate safety margin.
More Energy Does Not Automatically Mean Better Results
One of the biggest misconceptions about laser hair removal is that a treatment should feel extremely hot or painful to be effective.
That is not necessarily true.
Some clients may experience warmth, mild discomfort, or a snapping sensation during treatment. The experience can vary depending on the area being treated, the hair being targeted, and the laser technology being used.
An unnecessarily aggressive treatment does not automatically produce better long-term results. In fact, using inappropriate settings can increase the risk of irritation, burns, pigmentation changes, or other skin reactions.
Good laser hair removal is about controlled energy, not maximum energy.
What About Settings That Are Too Low?
The opposite can also be a problem.
If the energy level is too low for the individual’s hair and skin characteristics, the laser may not deliver enough energy to effectively affect the hair follicle.
This is why simply choosing a very gentle setting for everyone is not the answer either.
The goal is to find the right treatment setting for that person and treatment area.
A qualified laser professional should evaluate the skin and hair and adjust the treatment parameters rather than using exactly the same settings for every client.
Why Two People May Need Different Settings
Imagine two clients coming in for the same treatment area.
One client may have fair skin with thick, dark hair. Another may have a darker skin tone with finer hair.
Even though they are asking for the same service, their treatment parameters may need to be different.
The same applies to different areas of the body. Underarms, legs, bikini areas, and facial areas can have different hair characteristics and may respond differently to treatment.
Laser hair removal is not a one-size-fits-all treatment.
Your Skin Should Be Treated With Care
Effective laser hair removal should always balance two things:
Effective energy delivery + appropriate skin safety
The purpose is to target the hair follicle while minimizing unnecessary exposure to the surrounding skin.
This is why an experienced technician should assess the client before treatment and consider changes between appointments. Skin condition, recent sun exposure, tanning, hair growth, and previous treatment response can all affect how a treatment should be performed.
A professional may also adjust settings as the treatment course progresses.
Why Results Take Multiple Sessions
Another common misconception is that one very strong treatment should remove all the hair permanently.
Hair grows in different cycles, and laser hair removal is most effective when the hair is in an appropriate growth phase. Because not all hairs are in the same phase at the same time, multiple treatments are normally needed.
The objective is not to “destroy everything” in one appointment.
The objective is to treat the hair effectively over a series of properly planned sessions.
The Bottom Line
If someone tells you that the best laser hair removal treatment is simply the one using the highest setting, be careful.
Stronger is not automatically better.
The quality of a laser treatment depends on using the appropriate technology, understanding the client’s skin and hair characteristics, selecting suitable treatment parameters, and monitoring how the skin responds.
At Golden Pulse Laser Clinic, we focus on the right treatment settings for the individual, not simply the strongest setting possible.
Your skin is different from everyone else’s. Your laser treatment should be too.
Project Advice: In laser hair removal, as in many things in life, turning the dial all the way up is not a treatment strategy.
