Eyebrow Tattoo vs Microblading: Which Is Right for You?

What Is an Eyebrow Tattoo?

An eyebrow tattoo is the classic, machine-based method of permanent makeup: a tattoo machine deposits ink deep into the skin to build a solid, filled-in brow shape. Because the pigment sits deeper than in any other brow method, the result is truly long-lasting — often five years or more before it needs refreshing.

The look is bolder and more solid, which suits clients who want brows that always look “done” with no daily makeup. It is also a strong option when little or no natural brow hair is left, because solid shading can rebuild a complete brow shape from scratch.

Eyebrow Tattoo

Permanence cuts both ways. Tattoo ink can shift to blue-green, red, or grey tones over the years, and lines can blur as skin ages — yet removing an eyebrow tattoo is difficult, costly, and often incomplete, usually requiring multiple laser tattoo removal sessions.

That is why most modern studios rarely use traditional tattoo ink for brows. If you want a long-lasting, low-maintenance brow with a softer, more natural result, the semi-permanent method below was designed exactly for that.

What Is Microblading (and What Makes Phibrows Different?)

Microblading is a semi-permanent technique in which fine, hair-like strokes are drawn by hand with a row of tiny blades, then filled with medical-grade pigment. Instead of one solid shape, the artist rebuilds your brows hair by hair — which is why microbladed brows look natural even from a few centimetres away.

Phibrows (PhiBrows) is a premium microblading standard: artists train at a certified academy, map each brow with golden-ratio symmetry tailored to the face, and use highly pigmented, hypoallergenic pigments. Every Phibrows artist microblades — but not every microblading artist meets the Phibrows standard.

Microblading

No tattoo machine is involved. The pigment sits in a much shallower layer of the skin than tattoo ink, so microblading fades gradually and naturally over 1 to 3 years instead of staying for life. Topical numbing keeps the session comfortable, and touch-ups — one around 4–6 weeks after the first session, then roughly every 12–18 months — keep the strokes crisp.

Fading is a feature, not a flaw: as your face, style, and brow trends change, your brows can change with them.

Eyebrow Tattoo vs Microblading: Which Is Better?

Neither method is universally “better” — they solve different problems. Here is how they compare side by side:

 Eyebrow TattooMicroblading / Phibrows
ToolTattoo machineHand-held microblade
LookSolid, bold, “makeup done”Individual hair strokes, natural
Longevity5+ years, often permanent1–3 years, fades gradually
Colour over timeMay shift blue, grey, or redFades to a lighter tone
RemovalDifficult — laser sessionsFades on its own
Touch-upsColour boost after years4–6 weeks, then yearly

The practical rule: choose microblading if you want natural, flexible, lower-commitment brows — what most of our clients ask for. Choose a tattoo-style method only if you specifically want a bold, permanent shape and accept the removal risk.

Frequently asked questions

Is microblading a tattoo? Technically it is a form of cosmetic tattooing, but the tool, pigment depth, and fading behaviour are completely different from a traditional eyebrow tattoo.

Which one hurts more? Both are comfortable with topical numbing; most clients rate microblading 2–3 out of 10.

Can an old eyebrow tattoo be corrected? Often yes — but it needs an in-person assessment. Book a free consultation and we will tell you honestly what is achievable.
